Oxley Hughes Limited is a leading innovative solution provider to the worldwide IVD, cell based, lab automation and microplate markets. We state this because we have developed, manufacture and now supply the new generation of microplates which either remove or reduce common causes of variation in microplates which arise through standard microplate handling and maintenance practises. This improved handling and maintenance benefit applies to all uses of microplates. For example, microplate based ELISA diagnostic kits can be improved through a reduction in variation. Company Background

Oxley Hughes Limited was founded in 2012 by Dr Simon Stafford who wanted to bring his scientific skills and solutions to the worldwide science community. Through Oxley Hughes, patent protection of the microplate technology has so far been granted in the UK, Europe, Australia and China. To ensure Oxley Hughes’ microplate products are manufactured to the highest of standards in the UK, Oxley Hughes formed a strategic manufacturing partnership with Bowles and Walker Ltd., a company which has been established for over 40 years manufacturing a range of precision plastic injection moulding products for the Engineering, Retail, Medical and Pharmaceutical industries. The reason for this collaboration is Dr Stafford wanted a partnership with an established company with a successful commercial track record in precision injection moulding. Additionally, Oxley Hughes will build on this success to become established and well known as a supplier of high quality products for many years to come. This is a main company assurance from Oxley Hughes. For you, our customers and collaborators, this means when you use our modified microplate products you are assured there will be a consistent supply of high quality products in the future. Dr Simon Stafford Ph.D., B.Sc. (Hons) – Director & Founder
Simon is the founder of Oxley Hughes Limited. He has over 20 years’ experience of using microplates and has carried out research and development activities at various academic institutions and companies throughout the UK. Through his work he has direct experience of the common microplate handling and maintenance issues, both in manual and automated systems, which effect microplate assay quality and outputs. He is responsible for a number of patents granted worldwide. He set up Oxley Hughes to enable him to bring the benefits of his new and innovative microplate solutions to other end users. Simon has used his intellectual property to give Oxley Hughes a number of Unique Selling Point’s (USP’s) as well as microplate advantages and benefits through the granted patent protection of his microplate technology.

Andrew has been the owner of Bowles & Walker since 1995. He has over 30 years of experience in the plastics and tool making sector. Bowles & Walker Ltd. is a Precision Injection Moulding company based in Norfolk. It has been established for over 40 years with a wealth of experience supplying into the Pharmaceutical, Laboratory and Medical industries for UK and export use. Bowles & Walker are able to design, manufacture and advise on all aspects of tooling required. They have an on-going policy to invest in the latest technology and equipment to maintain the standards required in this competitive manufacturing sector.

Oxley Hughes’ microplates are manufactured from plastic crystal styrene and are in the 96 well format and meet the microplate standards ANSI/SLAS 1-2004 through ANSI/SLAS 4-2004 [5]. The wells are flat bottomed and fit existing microplate readers. The microplates can be supplied clean and/or sterilised as well as tissue culture ready. Lids can be supplied to suit your requirements.


Oxley Hughes is actively looking to form commercial partnerships and collaborations with manufacturers of diagnostic kits, automated microplate washers and surface coating services or providers. How well does Oxley Hughes’ microplate technology work? Third party proof of concept studies demonstrated the efficacy of the company’s microplate technology as well as the company being cited in four publications in peer reviewed international scientific journals [4,6,7,8].

“We have now used the plates produced by Oxley Hughes Ltd for half a year. My research group and I feel that they are of excellent quality. We were using these plates for ELISA assays performing detections of growth factors/cytokines as well as characterisation of phosphorylation of a signalling protein mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR). The plates were always reliable and allowed us to obtain excellent standard curves with very low standard deviation. We were very satisfied with the plates and applying them now for performing the in-cell assays as well as detection of DNA-binding activity of transcriprion factors. These plates are very good for the cell work since they allow minimisation of cell loss and damage during technical procedures.” [4]
